Swoon is a contemporary American street artist best known for her illustrative portraiture. Working in a wide-ranging practice that includes installation and performance, her work has a recurrent activist motive. Swoon’s large-scale images are often printed on recycled newspaper and glued to the sides of urban architecture using wheat paste—an inexpensive and convenient form of mass distribution. Born Caledonia Dance Curry in 1977 in New London, CT, Swoon moved to New York, NY to attend the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, and currently works and resides in the borough. Her work gained recognition after a solo show at Jeffrey Deitch’s SoHo gallery in 2005, quickly attracting the attention of The Museum of Modern Art in New York. Her work has since been shown in the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston, and the Sao Paolo Museum of Art. Notably, her solo show “Submerged Motherlands” at the Brooklyn Museum in 2014 was the museum’s first exhibition dedicated to a living street artist.
